Want to do a self-funded PhD in the Crowd Computing Research Group?
Why even do a PhD while working
There are many reasons! Get a sword. Get a top hat. Flex to your colleagues. Deepen your knowledge and practical skills with the latest research on a topic. The world is changing, evolving, even accelerating. So staying up to date with research in a field is a way to differentiate yourself positively. Maybe even contribute some of that research! This could open up new career avenues in R&D, and of course, you get a shot at building something societally meaningful in the public domain this way. Why would you need doctoral studies for that? You don’t! But we all benefit tremendously from deadlines, structure, and brains to bounce ideas with. We will give you all that, and more.
With us, you do a PhD in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Oulu Graduate School, UniOGS.
Important Clarifications
- Doing a PhD is not the same as getting a funded position. When we have funded positions available, we announce them on the University of Oulu Career Pages
- In the optimal situation, your employer knows you’re going for a PhD, although the PhD does not (and of course should not) affect your job other than by supporting your growth
- A PhD is typically 3-4 years of full-time work. This doesn’t mean that it’s going to be a decade “on the side” but it’s a substantial commitment. So sleep on it. Then, if it still feels like a great idea, wonderful! Congratulations. Schedule a call with Simo to talk about it. We can make it straightforward, but it’s still going to be a good pile of work!
Topics?
You can bring your own topic! Just make sure it’s roughly in the field of Human-Computer Interaction ~ building and studying interactive applications, preferrably in health and wellbeing contexts.
Or, better yet, if there’s something suitable for you in our industry-phd catalogue below, we can work on that. Of course, there’s some wiggle room there, so we’ll tailor it to your needs.
Your needs? Yes, we tweak these topics to support your career growth in the precise technologies and domain areas that you wish to expand your expertise in.
