The Colors of CHI

This project investigates the use of color in articles published at the CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems.

Academic AdvisorDr. Jonas Oppenlaender
TopicsMeta-research, Data Science, Machine Learning
DegreeMaster’s thesis

Tasks

  1. Literature review
  2. Identify and extract figures in CHI papers, using a computer vision model for figure detection
  3. Classify the figures into separate categories (photo, chart, etc.) by training a classifier or using an existing model
  4. Analyze colors in figures
  5. Analyze correlations of color use with scholarly indicators (citations, downloads) and paper topics (e.g., investigate color use in sub-communities of CHI).

Code for 3) is available, though it will require some work to extract reasonable color sets from the figures. That is because most figures are blurry to some degree —> there are many colors that humans do not perceive as important. The work, thus, also includes research on ways of aggregating these colors to derive a color set that aligns with human perception, based on a review of the literature.
